PruBSN distributes free takaful protection to impoverished households

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) – Prudential BSN Takaful Bhd (PruBSN), through its charitable arm, PruBSN Prihatin is committed to continuing its efforts to protect extreme poor households in the country by offering free PruBSN Microtakaful Jariyah plans to more than 12,000 recipients in the northern and east coast regions.
In a statement, it said the initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM).
“As the No.1 Family Takaful Operator in Malaysia, we humbly expressed our support to the less fortunate group by applying our expertise in takaful and came out with this initiative, giving social protection to the less fortunate via PruBSN Microtakaful Jariyah,” PruBSN Prihatin president Wan Saifulrizal Wan Ismail said on the plan that takes effect in November.
“Additionally, the importance of this initiative became more evident especially with the pandemic, hence why we decided to step up our efforts by providing protection to 28,000 recipients, which is an additional 3,000 recipients compared to that of 2020,” he said.
Entering its fourth year, PruBSN Prihatin provides vulnerable communities across the nation with a PruBSN Microtakaful Jariyah plan that is mainly funded by the PruBSN zakat fund at zero cost.
The plan offers free basic takaful coverage for 12 months to selected heads of household. A guaranteed financial assistance of RM10,000 will be disbursed directly into the nominee’s bank account, in the event of death of the head of family.
The selection of the recipients for this programme is carried out by the ICU of JPM, which is the government agency assigned to manage the National Poverty Database System, eKasih. The eKasih System serves to assist in planning, implementing and monitoring national poverty programmes.
“PruBSN Microtakaful Jariyah is expected to be a solution to the financial problems faced by most low-income households when they lose their breadwinner. A total of RM2.24 million was allocated this year by PruBSN Prihatin for this initiative.
“Since its launch in 2018, the programme has benefited over 78,000 low-income households. Through this, we hope to reiterate our commitment to the well-being of the community and continuously making a difference in society,” Wan Saifulrizal said.
JPM’s ICU director-general Datuk Ruji Ubi said the government always welcome the involvement of the private sector, non-governmental organisations and civil society to jointly mobilise energy in supporting its efforts to continue providing financial assistance to the extreme poor households by 2025.
“Strategic collaboration in the form of financial assistance, social protection, or through in-kind assistance, is highly recommended. The collaboration between these agencies is essential to close the poverty gap in terms of social, financial and well-being of Malaysian communities. We are truly honoured to be a part of this initiative with PruBSN and look forward to continuously working together,” he added.
PruBSN Microtakaful Jariyah is the largest flagship community programme that involves recipients from all over Malaysia.
Implemented in tranches, the 2021 distribution of PruBSN Microtakaful Jariyah plans were allocated for a total of 28,000 recipients from the central zone (Selangor and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan), southern zone (Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor), northern zone (Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis), east coast zone (Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu), and Sabah and Sarawak.
Earlier in March and August, a total of 15,938 selected heads of household from the low-income group in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak were among the recipients of the 2021 distribution.
