KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) — Young golfer Ammar Aiman Mohd Fauzi was crowned as the Boys’ 15-18 years category champion in the 3rd Leg of the University Utara Malaysia International Secondary School Melaka (UUMISM)-SportExcel Malaysian Junior Golf Tour.
The final round of the tournament at the Tasik Puteri Golf and Country Club today saw the 15-year-old golfer card another nine over 81, equalling yesterday’s first-round score to clinch his maiden title with a total score of 18 over 162.
R. Dhesigean had to settle for second place with a total of 20 over 164, while Muhammad Nastha Ilyashah Roslee came in third with 22 over 166.
The Pasir Gudang-born Ammar Aiman was delighted as his hard work in training paid off with his first tournament win.
“This is the biggest competition I have ever won gold, so of course, I am happy and grateful. However, I am aware that I still need to practice to strengthen my putting skills for the next tournament,” he told Bernama here, today.
Ammar Aiman said he would now set his sights on the 54th Malaysian Amateur Closed tournament that will be held at Royal Perak Golf Club from June 28-30.
Meanwhile, SportExcel executive director C. Sivanandan said he was thankful that the tournament went smoothly and got a lot of participation from junior players.
“Today’s event is in line with our vision, being the only programme in the country where you have a circuit like this grants platform for juniors to excel. Hence, our job is to develop them in terms of skills, fitness, as well as mentally, and assist where we can so that they can become professional players one day,” he said.
The annual tour comprises 12 legs offering an opportunity for junior golfers to showcase their talent and earn golf scholarships at UUMISM in Ayer Keroh, Melaka to pursue academic and golfing excellence.
