Booktoker Inspires Youth To Read Books Through Social Media

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – Several studies conducted in 2019 have shown that Malaysians, on average, read only two books per year.

Bucking the trend is bookToker Nurdayana Batrisya Mohamad Nasir, 21, who was born in Sungai Petani, Kedah and brought up in the city, when she managed to break her personal record of reading 85 books last year.

For the young entrepreneur, the two-year lockdown which saw tough measures enforced under the Movement Control Order (MCO) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was a blessing in disguise as she had a luxury of time on her hands to read books at home.

“I set a target for myself to read at least 60 books a year, with last year, being a record breaker, and for this year, I have so far read about 20 books,” she told Bernama recently.

Apart from reading books, she also scrolls TikTok for video content that are of interest from #BookTok hashtag, a new trend on TikTok, with an educational twist.  Within months, she became one of its creators.

Nurdayana’s TikTok account, @orchidslibrary, was established in April 2020. Her account has now reached 215,100 followers, with her popular content garnering hundreds of thousands of views and on certain days, more than a million.

The bookToker (an influencer who encourages people to read) keeps abreast of current trends and adopts viral ideas to share her excitement about books through videos and pictures via Instagram as well.
