NON HALAL outlet review – Hungry Bacon

Named after the owners’ Chef Timothy and his wife Pearl’s five-year-old miniature poodle Bacon’s perpetual hunger, the large photos of Bacon on the restaurant’s wall are testament of their love for their fur baby.

Chef Timothy Sebastian has clocked up more than 20 years of experience at well-known and famous establishments specialising in steaks and BBQs in the Klang Valley. At the end of 2021, the couple decided to venture out with their own venue, the aptly named Hungry Bacon.
Oink lovers will find themselves in porcine heaven here, as Tim unleashes his culinary creativity in the kitchen while Pearl minds the front of house. His masterful interpretation of all things piggy includes the trio of starters named bacon-wrapped lollipops, bacon cones and bacon crunchies.

Inspired by boxing chicken, each dish of bacon-wrapped lollipops is cooked fresh upon order, with moist and juicy pork sausage sheathed in savoury bacon and served up with dips of mayo, Bbq sauce and basil oil (RM24).
The California roll inspired crispy bacon cones come bursting with chili con carne, sour cream, cheese sauce, Pico de Gallo and jalapeños. Truly a delightful melange of flavours in the mouth. (RM25)
The third part of the trinity is a reinvention of deep-fried breaded bacon strips that look as good as they taste, taking you to the next level with each addictive crunch (RM18).

As a main course, the crowd favourite is definitely the 250-gram pork shoulder chop, oozing in both taste and texture. The meat is brined for 48 hours, rendering it tender with a touch of sweet marbling. The accompanying tangy Romesco sauce provides the perfect pairing for this dish (RM35).

Another cut that is also brined for 48-hours is the 500-gram tomahawk, perfect for two people to share. The brining concentrates its flavour while the surface char gives a pleasant bite (RM69).
The pork shoulder and tomahawk are both accompanied by truffle mash, steamed broccoli, herb butter and sit on an au jus of slow roasted chicken and pork bones and a Mirepoix of carrot, onion, celery and leeks, its flavour boosted with tomato paste, Thyme, Rosemary and Guinness.

Another slow-cooked dish is their 500-gram BBQ ribs, lathered with American dry-rub seasoning. The meat is very tender and the sauce is equally good, inviting you to ditch the cutlery and dig in with your bare fingers (RM65).

Speaking of fall-off-the-bone, the 450-gram Bacon ribs are another favourite here, being cured to lip smacking smokiness. Both rib dishes come with US potato fries, coleslaw, cornbread and a variety of 4 sauces (RM69).
Chef Tim is equally adept at his Swedish-style pork meatballs with lingonberry sauce, the sausage platter boasting a mix of 3 plump and juicy Hungarian, Cumberland and Nurnberger bangers, Bacon fried rice, Hokkien mee and his family recipe of wild boar peratal.
His Nasi Kerabu Babi Percik Kembar for example, marries typical Kelantan blue pea flower rice, solok lada, fish crackers and salted egg with two pork shoulder skewers, budu, sambal belacan and percik sauce. Fresh-fried pork lard lends an unexpected crunch, while the ulam invites a delicious dance of flavours (RM35).

Then there’s the 180-gram pork burger, its meaty, juicy patty marinated in Cajun spices, topped with melted American cheddar, caramelised onions and bacon, served with US potato fries (RM30).

The slow-roasted pumpkin salad features a wedge of grilled pumpkin wrapped with bacon and rendered with bacon oil for added depth of tastiness. The pumpkin is nestled in a bed of rocket, spinach, chickpeas, sun-dried tomatoes, feta cheese, pine nuts and balsamic pearls (RM30).

When you order the Ultimate Nachos, Chef Timothy personally presents the corn tortilla chips to your table, then pours steaming-hot cheesy sauce over them, followed by thick bacon chili con carne, sour cream, guacamole, Pico de Gallo, jalapenos and bacon bits (RM40).

Not to be outdone, Hungry Bacon’s signature beverages are light, zingy and zesty, a good balance for the meat fest. They also serve bottled beer and bucket promos at very reasonable prices.
